Fontanel is one of the mostvulnerable places on the body of the crumbs. These are the empty spaces between the bones of the skull, covered with a strong membrane.
It is one of the main indicators of development in the first year of life. It is located between the parietal and frontal bones of theskull, and resembles a rhombus in shape . It is soft with rather dense edges.
When a child is just born naturally, its head, as arule, has an egg-like shape, i.e. the crown extends upwards. Moms should not be afraid of this, because it is a normal phenomenon. It happens because during childbirth the bones of the baby’s skull are compressed due to the soft areas of cartilage tissue.
Later in the monthly examination, pediatricians check its size and draw appropriate conclusions about the development and health.
The process of closing in newborns
Normally, the central fontanel in newborns closes by 12-18 months. But it also happens that this happens earlier or vice versa later, which may not very well affect the future health of the baby.
Early closure is not desirable, as it can provoke an increase in intracranial pressure. It may occur due to the fact that the mother uncontrolledly took vitamins and calcium-containing drugs during pregnancy.
Nowadays, more and more children are born with completely closed ones, which is alarming the doctors, because it affects the development of the brain of a child. At the same time, doctors still believe that closing is not a reason to transfer a child to a calcium-free diet, it just has to be calcium, contained in natural products.
Late closing after 1.5 years, on the contrary, indicates an insufficient amount of calcium and vitamin D in the body. This may contribute to the development of rickets. In such a situation, the pediatrician may schedule a test for calcium and an extra dose of vitamin D in droplets. Parents need to correct the diet by introducing calcium and vitamin D foods into their diets.
The size in newborns
The size in a newborn is about 2.5 x 2.5 cm. But there can also be deviations from the norm.
Too large size can be observed in children with malformations, for example, Down syndrome, various endocrine diseases and abnormal metabolism, in premature babies.
In premature babies, the occipital fontanel usually closes later after 3 months, and not as in healthy ones – in 1 month.
It plays a role in the thermoregulation of the brain. If the body temperature rises to 38 degrees or more degrees, and it is very dangerous, then the cooling of the brain takes place through the membrane. It also protects the head from injuries to the skull.
Many mothers are afraid to touch the fontanel. But this is not the case, the membrane is very elastic and strong, so you can safely brush the child and stroke him/her on the head.
